Greve in Chianti

グレーヴェ・イン・キャンティ

The largest UGA of Chianti Classico, spanning elegant hillside to juicy riverside Sangiovese.

Greve in Chianti is one of the eleven Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive (UGA) of the Chianti Classico DOCG, and the largest of them, located in the northern part of the denomination between Florence and the Chianti hills. It is one of only four townships contained entirely within the Chianti Classico zone. Altitudes range roughly from 200m to 600m, and the terroir is a mosaic of galestro schist, alberese limestone, and pockets of clay, giving the UGA notable stylistic diversity: wines from the higher, cooler reaches such as Panzano and the area toward Lamole show elegant, aromatic, floral Sangiovese with firm structure, while vineyards nearer the Greve river produce brighter, juicier, red-cherry-driven wines. Historic hamlets within the UGA include Montefioralle — a fortified medieval village that was home to the Vespucci family — and the town of Greve itself, long considered the commercial and cultural gateway to the Chianti Classico region.

Best for: Ideal for those wanting to explore the full stylistic range of Chianti Classico Sangiovese, from structured hillside wines to bright, approachable riverside styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Greve in Chianti unique among the Chianti Classico UGAs?
Greve is the largest UGA and one of only four townships lying entirely within the Chianti Classico zone. Its size and varied terroir mean the wines span from elegant, floral, high-altitude styles to brighter, juicier, red-cherry-driven wines nearer the Greve river.
Is Sangiovese the main grape variety here?
Yes. Sangiovese is the dominant grape and forms the backbone of every Chianti Classico wine produced in the Greve UGA, as required by the denomination's rules.
What altitude and soils define the Greve UGA?
Vineyards range from roughly 200m to 600m in altitude, on a mix of galestro schist, alberese limestone, and clay, which contributes to the area's diversity of wine styles.
Which historic villages are found within Greve?
The UGA includes the medieval fortified hamlet of Montefioralle, ancestral home of the Vespucci family, along with the town of Greve itself, historically the commercial gateway to Chianti Classico.
How does Greve differ from the Panzano and Lamole UGAs?
Panzano and Lamole are separate, officially recognized UGAs carved out of the historic Greve area for their especially distinctive terroirs (the Conca d'Oro amphitheater and high-altitude terraces, respectively), while Greve itself remains the broadest and most stylistically varied UGA in the denomination.
