Castello Vicchiomaggio is a historic Chianti Classico estate perched on a hilltop overlooking the Val di Greve, in Greve in Chianti, Tuscany. The castle's origins date back to around 1100, and since 1964 the property has been owned and run by the Matta family. Federico Matta, who built one of the UK's leading Italian wine import businesses starting in 1921, purchased the estate, and his son John Matta — trained at the Viticulture and Enology school in Alba, Piedmont — has led winemaking since 1970, earning multiple IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year awards. The estate spans 140 hectares, with roughly 24-32 hectares under vine planted mainly to Sangiovese alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Production centers on Chianti Classico across multiple tiers, including the Gran Selezione 'La Prima', as well as the acclaimed Toscana IGT Super Tuscan 'Ripa delle More', produced since 1980. Today John's daughter Victoria Matta is also active in winemaking, continuing the family's four-generation stewardship of the property.
