Founded in 1981 when the Swiss couple Bruno and Brigitte Widmer purchased the abandoned Brancaia hill estate in Castellina in Chianti, Brancaia has grown into one of Chianti Classico's most respected family-run wineries. In 1989 the family added the Poppi estate in Radda in Chianti, and in 1998 a third property in the Maremma on the Tuscan coast, giving Brancaia three distinct terroirs to draw on. The estate is now run by the founders' children — winemaker Barbara Widmer, together with her siblings Michael and Andi — who continue the founders' focus on structured, age-worthy Sangiovese-based wines, most famously the Super Tuscan blend 'Il Blu'.
