Syrah

About this wine

Crano is Baldetti's flagship wine and the estate's first varietal Syrah, produced since 2008 under the Cortona DOC — the Tuscan appellation built around this grape. Grapes are hand-harvested from the Pietraia vineyards at 300m elevation, fermented with 15-20 days of maceration, aged 12 months in 225-liter French oak barriques and rested at least 9 months in bottle before release. The 2018 vintage was awarded 91 points by Falstaff, and recent vintages have earned Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) in the Vini d'Italia guide.

Beginner's Note

An approachable, food-friendly Syrah that shows why Cortona built its reputation on this grape.

Sommelier's Note

"Crano is the wine that put Baldetti on the map — a Syrah with real spine, not a soft imitation of Rhône style."

Food Pairings

A structured, spicy Syrah that calls for red meat: grilled Chianina steak, wild boar ragù, roasted game birds, and hard aged pecorino.

When to drink it

Sunday roast dinners, grilled meat gatherings, cellar-worthy gifts for Syrah lovers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Baldetti's Crano distinctive among Tuscan Syrahs?
It was one of the wines that helped establish Cortona DOC as Tuscany's dedicated Syrah appellation, and its 12 months in barrique plus long bottle ageing give it a spicy, savory depth rare in more youthfully styled Super Tuscans.
What food pairs best with Crano?
Red meat and game — grilled steak, wild boar ragù, or roasted duck — stand up well to its structure and spice.
How long can Crano age?
Thanks to its barrique ageing and firm tannic structure, well-stored bottles can develop positively for 8-10 years from vintage.
