Gaiole in Chianti

ガイオーレ・イン・キャンティ

Structured, age-worthy Sangiovese from Chianti's coolest valley.

Gaiole in Chianti is one of the eleven officially recognized Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive (UGA) within the Chianti Classico DOCG, occupying the appellation's rugged eastern edge. Uniquely among Chianti's communal centers (along with Greve), Gaiole sits in a valley basin at the foot of the Monti del Chianti range rather than atop a hill, making it one of the coolest zones in the entire denomination. The UGA spans three distinct terroirs: a high-altitude western plateau near Lecchi with white alberese limestone soils, a gentler southern sector around the celebrated Monti subzone with warmer exposures, and a rugged northeastern area of brown sandy soils and dense forest. Vineyards range from roughly 300 to 650 meters above sea level, among the widest elevation spans in Chianti Classico. This diversity of altitude and calcareous, schist-rich soils produces Sangiovese of firm tannins, bright acidity, and mineral intensity, with the Monti subzone in particular prized for wines of exceptional class and long aging potential. Gaiole is also historically significant as home to Brolio Castle, the Ricasoli family estate where the modern Chianti formula was codified in 1872, and was one of the three medieval capitals of the original Chianti League.

Best for: Collectors and Sangiovese purists seeking firm tannins, bright acidity, and serious aging potential.
