La Porta di Vertine is a Sangiovese-focused wine project centered on the Vertine vineyard, a fan-shaped, south-facing plot at roughly 500 metres of altitude just outside the medieval walled hamlet of Vertine, in the commune of Gaiole in Chianti. The estate was founded in 2006 when Americans Dan and Ellen Lugosch purchased the first vineyard parcels in Vertine, with the legendary Tuscan oenologist Giulio Gambelli consulting on the first vintages (2006-2007) and winemaker Giacomo Mastretta overseeing organic, non-interventionist viticulture. Since 2015 the Vertine vineyard has been part of the Bertinga estate, which continues to produce the La Porta di Vertine Chianti Classico as a single-vineyard cru, fermenting and ageing the wine in concrete tanks for about 16 months to preserve fruit purity, freshness and mineral precision.
