Traditional Brunello from a centuries-old Montalcino estate
Abbadia Ardenga is a historic estate in Torrenieri, on the northeastern edge of Montalcino, Tuscany, whose roots trace back to an 11th-century monastery and, later, ownership by the noble Piccolomini family (whose members included Pope Pius II). Today the estate belongs to the Società Esecutori di Pie Disposizioni, an ancient Sienese charitable institution, and has been managed for decades by the Ciacci family — Mario Ciacci, who also served as director of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino for about 15 years, oversaw the estate's modern era. Farming just a handful of hectares dedicated entirely to Sangiovese, Abbadia Ardenga produces around 40,000 bottles a year across Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Piaggia DOCG, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Sant'Antimo Rosso DOC. Winemaking stays deliberately traditional: fermentation in stainless steel followed by a minimum of 36 months' aging in large Slavonian oak casks and further refinement in bottle before release, yielding structured, age-worthy wines that critics such as James Suckling and Jancis Robinson have praised as some of Montalcino's best-value classics.
