Toni Jost
Weingut Toni Jost is the most internationally recognized estate of Germany's Mittelrhein region, based in the historic Rhine-gorge town of Bacharach. The Jost family has cultivated Riesling in Bacharach since 1831, and the estate has operated continuously under the Toni Jost name since 1932. Its identity is anchored by the Bacharacher Hahn (also called "Im Hahn"), a steep, south-facing slate amphitheater that the family owns almost exclusively as a Monopollage and which carries the VDP.Grosse Lage classification — the Mittelrhein's defining single vineyard. Toni Jost was a founding member of VDP Mittelrhein in 1987 and joined VDP Rheingau in 1989, having expanded into loess-loam sites such as Wallufer Walkenberg and Martinsthaler Rödchen through family inheritance. Peter Jost modernized the estate from the 1980s onward; his daughter Cecilia Jost, the seventh generation, joined in 1996 after training at Geisenheim and has led winemaking since 2003. The roughly 14–15 hectare estate focuses almost entirely on Riesling, with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Pinot Blanc, producing wines prized for their precise acidity, pronounced slate minerality, and aging potential.

Weingut August Perll
Weingut August Perll is a family-owned winery in Boppard on the Middle Rhine, with roots tracing back to 1606, when the estate's historic Stammhaus was built. Now run by Thomas (August) Perll, the estate farms roughly ten hectares of steep, slate-soiled vineyards within the Bopparder Hamm — one of the largest contiguous vineyard sites on the Middle Rhine — including the parcels Mandelstein, Feuerlay, Ohlenberg and Fässerlay. Riesling is the overwhelming focus, vinified across the full spectrum from dry to nobly sweet styles including Beerenauslese and Eiswein, alongside small plantings of Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Müller-Thurgau. All work on the up-to-70%-gradient slopes is done by hand, with minimal cellar intervention. The estate has received Germany's Staatsehrenpreis and, on 24 occasions, the Bundesehrenpreis.

Weingut Baer
Weingut Baer is a family estate in Bacharach, on the Mittelrhein's UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the Rhine. Brothers Hermann and Peter Bär (the latter a Geisenheim-trained oenologist) took over the historic 1880 estate from Friedrich Bastian in 2021 and expanded it from 4 to roughly 20 hectares, over 90% planted to Riesling on steep slate slopes reaching up to 70% gradient. The estate farms its vineyards by hand, harvests with strict selection, and releases its dry Rieslings only after a minimum of two years' bottle ageing. Its portfolio is built around single vineyards including the monopole Bacharacher Posten (first documented 1335 as Wolfshöhle), Bacharacher Wolfshöhle, Steeger St. Jost, and the island monopole Heyles'en Werth, all farmed on Devonian slate that channels heat and minerality into the wines. Early vintages were quickly recognised: the 2021 Wolfshöhle scored 95 points from James Suckling, the Heyles'en Werth Riesling earned 94+ points from Falstaff and 94 from James Suckling, critic Stuart Pigott rated the debut vintage 90+, and the wines received 4 grapes at Gault&Millau.

Weingut Dr. Kauer
Founded in 1982 by Randolf and Martina Kauer, Weingut Dr. Kauer was the first certified organic winery in Bacharach and remains one of the pioneering organic estates on the Middle Rhine. The family farms just under 4 hectares of exclusively steep slate slopes — many exceeding 55% gradient and worked only with mechanical aids — across renowned sites such as Bacharacher Wolfshöhle, Kloster Fürstental, Urbarer Beulsberg, Oberdiebacher Fürstenberg and Oberweseler Oelsberg, all within the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. About 95% of the vineyard area is planted to Riesling, with the remainder Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). Randolf Kauer, also a professor of organic viticulture at Geisenheim University, and his daughter Anne Kauer, who joined the estate full-time in 2020, continue to farm certified organic (ECOVIN, EU organic logo), producing mineral-driven, terroir-transparent wines from the region's slate soils.

Weingut Heidrich
Weingut Heidrich, also listed as Weingut zum Rebstock, is a small family winery in Bacharach on the Mittelrhein, run by Thomas Heidrich (with father Rolf Heidrich). The estate farms about 3.5 hectares planted exclusively to Riesling, drawing from two steep, south-facing sites: the VDP Großes Gewächs vineyard Bacharacher Wolfshöhle and Steeger St. Jost. Annual production is roughly 30,000 bottles. The family also runs its own Weinstube, Zum Rebstock, on Mainzer Straße in Bacharach. A 2024 regional report noted the estate is no longer operated as a full-time winery as it once was, but the family continues to make wine and welcome guests on a smaller scale.

Weingut Lanius-Knab
VDP.Weingut Lanius-Knab is a family-owned estate in Oberwesel, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Lanius family has cultivated vines here for around 250 years, and since taking over the estate in the early 1990s, Jörg Lanius has grown it from a small part-time holding into a 10.5-hectare operation across the steep, slate-dominated slopes of the Mittelrhein. Riesling accounts for roughly 92% of plantings, complemented by Spätburgunder, with vineyards concentrated in the top VDP-classified sites of Engehöller Bernstein, Engehöller Goldemund and Oberweseler Oelsberg — the latter reaching inclines of up to 75%. Guided by the belief that 'if you bring home good grapes, you will also have good wine,' Lanius favors low yields, careful hand harvesting and gentle, minimal-intervention cellar work, producing wines described as lean, filigree and harmonious, with vintage and site character left clearly visible rather than smoothed over.
