ヴァイングート・ピーパー
The northernmost winery on the Mittelrhein, crafting mineral-driven wines from rare volcanic trachyte soil on the slopes of the Drachenfels.
About Weingut Pieper
Weingut Pieper is a family-run estate on the slopes of the legendary Drachenfels in the Siebengebirge, between Königswinter and Bad Honnef — the northernmost wine estate on the Mittelrhein. Founded in the 1960s-80s by Adolf Wilhelm "Bobbi" Pieper, the ten-hectare estate is now run by his grandson Felix Pieper, a Geisenheim-trained oenologist with winemaking experience in New Zealand. The vineyards sit on rare volcanic trachyte soil interspersed with slate and graywacke, at elevations of 60-140 metres on mostly south- and southwest-facing slopes. Ten white and two red grape varieties are cultivated, with Riesling accounting for about 40% of plantings, alongside Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner and the rare Ehrenfelser. Guided by the philosophy "Herkunft muss spürbar sein" (origin must be perceptible), Felix Pieper favours low yields, hand harvesting, and a mix of steel-tank, barrique and both spontaneous and cultured-yeast fermentation to give each wine a distinct character. The estate holds three stars in the VINUM, Falstaff, Gault&Millau and Eichelmann wine guides.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers who enjoy cool-climate, mineral-forward Riesling with a distinct volcanic-soil signature, and for those curious about lesser-known German wine regions beyond the Mosel and Rheingau.
