About Weingut Walter Perll

Weingut Walter Perll is a family-run estate in Boppard, in Germany's Mittelrhein wine region, whose roots as a Boppard wine-growing family trace back to the early 17th century. In 1972 the original family estate was divided between two brothers, August and Walter, each inheriting about 4 hectares — giving rise to the separate Weingut Walter Perll alongside the unrelated Weingut August Perll. The estate now farms 6.5 hectares of steep, terraced slopes — inclines of up to 85% — within the Bopparder Hamm, an almost 6-kilometer stretch of vineyard on the great bend of the Rhine and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Individual sites include Fässerlay, Mandelstein, Feuerlay and Ohlenberg, planted on weathered slate soils with pockets of loose stone. Riesling accounts for around 80% of plantings, complemented by Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, with small amounts of Dornfelder, Kerner, Rivaner and Scheurebe. Since 2015 the estate has been run by the fifth generation, siblings Walter Perll Jr. and Elisabeth (supported by her husband Klaus), producing everything from dry quality wines to fruity, racy Kabinett-style wines up to Beerenauslese, plus red, rosé and traditional Winzersekt sparkling wine.
