Entre-Deux-Mers
アントル・ドゥー・メール
Bordeaux's largest appellation for crisp, aromatic white wines.
Entre-Deux-Mers is a prominent wine region in Bordeaux, France, situated between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The name literally translates to 'between two seas,' referring to the tidal influence of these rivers. This large appellation spans across 135 communes and over 7,000 hectares of vineyards. The region is primarily renowned for its crisp, dry, and aromatic white wines made predominantly from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle. While the AOC designation for white wines dates back to 1937, a red wine PDO was added in 2023. The terroir, characterized by clay-limestone soils, contributes to the freshness, vibrant acidity, and subtle minerality that define the region's signature style, making it a benchmark for accessible, high-quality Bordeaux whites.

Château Haut-Rian
Founded in 1988 by Michel and Isabelle Dietrich — children of winemakers from Alsace and Champagne — Château Haut-Rian is a family estate nestled in Rions, a 14th-century fortified medieval village on the banks of the Garonne. After six years in Australia working with Rémy Martin's vineyards, the couple returned to Bordeaux to craft wines that reflect the distinct terroir of Entre-Deux-Mers and Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux. The estate spans around 75 hectares of clay-limestone and gravelly hillsides, with some white grape plots in the cooler village of Soulignac featuring Sémillon vines planted before 1960. In 2019, their daughter Pauline Lapierre, an oenologist trained in Montpellier, took over the estate, joined by her husband William in 2020. Since then, she has driven a full transition to organic and biodynamic viticulture: all vineyards are now certified organic (Ecocert) and all grapes biodynamic (Demeter), with additional certifications including Terra Vitis, HVE, and Bee Friendly. The estate is renowned for its white wines — a 60% Sémillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc blend with vivid freshness and mineral tension — as well as elegant Merlot-led reds from the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux.

Château Marjosse
Château Marjosse is the personal estate of Pierre Lurton, the legendary director of both Château Cheval Blanc and Château d'Yquem — two of Bordeaux's most iconic domaines. Located in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, the estate sits on exceptionally rare Astéries limestone soils similar to those of Saint-Émilion, rising to 60 metres above sea level. When Lurton took over in 1990 the estate covered just 12 hectares; today it spans 65 hectares. The white wine — a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle from vines up to 75 years old — is regarded as a reference among Bordeaux dry whites. The structured red, planted to 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, has earned scores including 94 points (The Wine Independent) and 90 points (Vinous) for the 2020 vintage.

Château Moulin de Launay
Château Moulin de Launay is a 74-hectare family estate located in Soussac, in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation of Bordeaux. Named after the Butte de Launay — the highest point in Gironde at 153 meters above sea level — the estate has been in the Greffier family for five generations and over 150 years. The family has always specialized exclusively in dry white wines, resisting the trend in the 1970s to uproot white vines for reds. Ludovic Greffier took full control in 2016, continuing the estate's mission of quality-driven white wine production. The clay-limestone soils and naturally cooler microclimate of the Entre-Deux-Mers region allow the six grape varieties grown here — Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard — to express remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity. The estate practices total grass cover, maintains low yields (under 3,300 vines per hectare), and is progressively converting to organic viticulture at approximately ten hectares per year. It also works with the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels of Aquitaine to preserve the biodiversity of the Butte de Launay.

Château Reynon
Château Reynon is a prestigious estate located in Béguey, on the hillside slopes overlooking the Garonne River in the Entre-Deux-Mers area of Bordeaux. Acquired by the David family in 1958, it was taken over in 1976 by Florence David and her husband Denis Dubourdieu — the legendary professor of oenology at the University of Bordeaux, known worldwide as 'Le Pape du Blanc' (The Pope of White Wine). Denis Dubourdieu's pioneering research into Sauvignon Blanc aromatics, including the identification of thiols responsible for its signature aromas, transformed the style of white Bordeaux. Château Reynon produces three wines: a Bordeaux Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc), a Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux rouge (primarily Merlot), and a rosé. The white has received particular acclaim — the 2022 vintage earned a gold medal at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon and 90 points from Vinous. Since Denis's passing in 2016, his sons Jean-Jacques and Fabrice continue the estate with the same exacting standards he established.

Château Roquefort
Located in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, Château Roquefort is a historic family estate with roots stretching back over 6,000 years. The property features a 14-meter Neolithic dolmen (the longest in Europe), a fortified château mentioned in records from 1291, and an 18th-century dovecote and chartreuse. Jean Bellanger purchased the estate in 1976 and replanted the vines from 1983; his son Frédéric has led the estate since 1995, expanding it to 240 hectares with around 100 hectares under vine. The soils—limestone plateau, clay-limestone, and cooler clay-loam—support Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon. The estate is committed to sustainability: ISO 14001 certified since 2017, HVE (High Environmental Value) certified, and fully converted to organic farming for white wines since 2021. The range includes AOC Entre-Deux-Mers whites, AOC Bordeaux, and AOC Bordeaux Supérieur reds, with notable cuvées such as Rives, Grand Blanc, Les Roches Blanches, and Grande Cuvée. Château Roquefort won the Best of Wine Tourism Architecture award in 2019 and holds the Vignobles et Découvertes certification.

Château Sainte-Marie
Château Sainte-Marie has roots stretching back centuries — once managed by the monks of La Sauve Majeure Abbey, and already noted in the legendary Feret wine bible in 1874. Located in Targon in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, the estate is today in the hands of fifth-generation winemaker Stéphane Dupuch, who took over in 1997 and immediately converted to organic viticulture. Stéphane employs biodynamic principles, following the lunar calendar for all vineyard and cellar work, hand-harvesting each parcel, and vinifying separately with indigenous yeasts. His pioneering bamboo mulching system nourishes the soils using plant material grown entirely on the estate. Old vines — including a century-old Sémillon and Merlot plot — yield wines of rare complexity and freshness at exceptional value.

Château Thieuley
Château Thieuley is a pioneering family estate located in La Sauve-Majeure, at the heart of Bordeaux's Entre-Deux-Mers region. The property was purchased in 1949 by André Courselle and transformed into an 80-hectare benchmark under the direction of his son Francis Courselle — an agricultural engineer and oenology professor at Bordeaux University who was among the first winemakers to demonstrate that Bordeaux could produce genuinely exciting dry white wines. His daughters Sylvie (business and commercial) and Marie (winemaking and vineyard management), both engineers and oenologists, took over in 2004 and have continued the estate's commitment to freshness, terroir expression, and environmental responsibility. The estate holds Terra Vitis certification (since 2017), Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) status (since 2019), and Bee Friendly certification — a comprehensive commitment to biodiversity across all 80 hectares. The estate encompasses three properties: the flagship Château Thieuley, Château Saint-Genès for export markets, and Clos Sainte-Anne, a 5-hectare parcel of gravelly soil in Capian. White wines are made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Gris; reds from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The prestige cuvée Réserve Francis Courselle, produced in both white and red versions, has earned praise from critics including James Suckling.

Château Tour de Mirambeau
Château Tour de Mirambeau is the flagship estate of the Despagne family, located in Rauzan at the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers in Bordeaux. The Despagnes have cultivated vines on this property for over 250 years, but it was Jean-Louis Despagne who in 1969 devoted himself fulltime to estate winemaking and established the château's international reputation. The estate — its name derived from an old windmill where Jean-Louis and his wife Odile settled after their wedding — spans 88 hectares of clay-limestone soils. Today managed by Jean-Louis's children Thibault, Gabriel, and Basaline alongside technical director Joël Élissalde, the domaine farms 250 hectares across multiple estates and is widely regarded as the leading producer in Entre-Deux-Mers. Their crisp, aromatic white wines blend Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle; their reds — sold under the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur AOCs — are built on Merlot with the two Cabernets. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has praised the estate as producing wines that 'perform way, way above their official pedigree.'

Château de Cugat
Château de Cugat is a historic estate dating to the 1500s, perched on a hilltop in the village of Blasimon in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers. The Meyer family has owned the property since 1926; winemaker Benoît Meyer took charge in the early 1990s with the ambition of crafting wines that punch far above their humble Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. The vineyards — largely farmed organically — sit on gravelly-clay soils remarkably similar to those of Pomerol, lending the wines depth and elegance uncommon for the price. The estate holds HVE 3 (High Environmental Value) certification since the 2021 vintage. Three cuvées are produced: the Classique, Première, and the prestige Cuvée Francis Meyer. Importer Charles Neal Selections has championed the estate in the US, calling it a wine that 'just blows away' comparable offerings.
