Château Moulin de Launay

シャトー・ムーラン・ド・ローネイ

Five generations of Greffier family mastery — Entre-Deux-Mers' most dedicated dry white wine estate, rooted at the highest point in Gironde (153m).

Château Moulin de Launay is a 74-hectare family estate located in Soussac, in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation of Bordeaux. Named after the Butte de Launay — the highest point in Gironde at 153 meters above sea level — the estate has been in the Greffier family for five generations and over 150 years. The family has always specialized exclusively in dry white wines, resisting the trend in the 1970s to uproot white vines for reds. Ludovic Greffier took full control in 2016, continuing the estate's mission of quality-driven white wine production. The clay-limestone soils and naturally cooler microclimate of the Entre-Deux-Mers region allow the six grape varieties grown here — Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard — to express remarkable freshness and aromatic complexity. The estate practices total grass cover, maintains low yields (under 3,300 vines per hectare), and is progressively converting to organic viticulture at approximately ten hectares per year. It also works with the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels of Aquitaine to preserve the biodiversity of the Butte de Launay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Château Moulin de Launay unique among Bordeaux producers?
Unlike most Bordeaux estates that produce both red and white wines, Château Moulin de Launay has specialized exclusively in dry white wines for over 150 years. This unwavering focus, combined with their clay-limestone terroir on the Butte de Launay — the highest point in Gironde at 153m — gives their wines exceptional freshness and aromatic depth rarely found in Bordeaux whites.
Which grape varieties are used in Château Moulin de Launay's wines?
The estate grows six white varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard. The flagship wine blends 45% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Sauvignon Gris, 15% Muscadelle, and 5% Ugni Blanc — a classically structured yet nuanced Entre-Deux-Mers blend where Sémillon adds body, Sauvignon brings aromatic lift, and Muscadelle contributes delicate floral notes.
What food pairings work best with Château Moulin de Launay?
The wines pair beautifully with seafood platters, sole meunière, grilled white meats, and fresh cheeses. Their high acidity and clean mineral finish also make them outstanding companions for sushi, sashimi, tempura, and other Japanese cuisine — a natural fit for the Japanese table.
Is Château Moulin de Launay committed to sustainable or organic farming?
Yes. The estate practices total grass cover and maintains low yields (under 3,300 vines per hectare). They are progressively converting approximately ten hectares per year to certified organic viticulture. They also collaborate with the Conservatoire d'Espaces Naturels of Aquitaine to monitor and protect the biodiversity of the Butte de Launay and are pursuing HVE 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and ISO 14001 environmental certifications.
Who is currently in charge of Château Moulin de Launay, and how long has the family owned it?
Ludovic Greffier, the fifth generation of the Greffier family, took full control of the estate in 2016. The family has stewarded the property for over 150 years, and the first bottled commercial sale dates back to 1979. Their long-term commitment to dry white wine production is one of the most distinctive stories in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation.
