Château Sainte-Marie
シャトー・サント・マリー
Biodynamic pioneer with century-old vines in Entre-Deux-Mers
Château Sainte-Marie has roots stretching back centuries — once managed by the monks of La Sauve Majeure Abbey, and already noted in the legendary Feret wine bible in 1874. Located in Targon in the heart of Entre-Deux-Mers, the estate is today in the hands of fifth-generation winemaker Stéphane Dupuch, who took over in 1997 and immediately converted to organic viticulture. Stéphane employs biodynamic principles, following the lunar calendar for all vineyard and cellar work, hand-harvesting each parcel, and vinifying separately with indigenous yeasts. His pioneering bamboo mulching system nourishes the soils using plant material grown entirely on the estate. Old vines — including a century-old Sémillon and Merlot plot — yield wines of rare complexity and freshness at exceptional value.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes Château Sainte-Marie stand out in Entre-Deux-Mers?
- Stéphane Dupuch is a true pioneer of organic and biodynamic farming in the region. He hand-harvests every parcel, follows the lunar calendar for all vineyard and cellar work, and developed a unique bamboo mulching system to nourish the soil using plants grown on the estate — practices almost unheard of at this price point in Bordeaux.
- Is the estate certified organic?
- Yes. Stéphane Dupuch converted the entire estate to organic viticulture immediately upon taking over in 1997 and has maintained organic certification for over 25 years.
- What is special about the Vieilles Vignes wines?
- The Vieilles Vignes (old vines) wines are made from century-old Sémillon and Merlot plots. These ancient roots yield concentrated flavors, remarkable freshness, and layered complexity that have earned scores of 91 points from critics including Wine Enthusiast and Falstaff.
- Does Château Sainte-Marie produce only white wine?
- No. While their crisp Entre-Deux-Mers whites are their signature, the estate also produces structured, generous red wines — all certified organic.
- What food pairs well with Château Sainte-Marie wines?
- The Entre-Deux-Mers whites pair beautifully with oysters, grilled seafood, fresh goat cheese, and sushi. The red wines are an excellent match for roasted chicken, lamb, and aged cheeses.
