Makiuchi Red is a new addition (pre-order opened December 15, 2025, shipping from December 20, 2025) to Tsuno Wine's Makinai Vineyard series, made from Merlot grown on the winery's own rain-swept Makinai (Makiuchi) plateau in Tsuno Town, Miyazaki. Unlike a single-harvest bottling, it is assembled from several vintages of estate Merlot and aged in oak barrels for roughly seven years before release, giving it a depth and 'layering of time' rare among Japanese reds. It shows a garnet colour with hints of bricking, concentrated aromas of dried fig, raisin and liqueur-soaked chocolate over gentle oak, bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a long, dry finish.

Sommelier's Note

Seven years patiently waiting in oak for one Merlot — that's a commitment few Japanese wineries make, and Makiuchi Red tastes like it.

New to wine?

A gentle, oak-aged red with soft tannins and dried-fruit sweetness — an approachable way into long-aged Japanese Merlot.

Food Pairings

Pairs beautifully with lean red-meat dishes such as grilled steak and roast beef, and with soy-based dishes like sukiyaki; its dried-fruit and chocolate notes also complement rum-laced gateau chocolat and Tsunowine & Bakery's fig-studded noix-raisin bread.

When to drink it

A slow weekend dinner built around red meat or sukiyaki, or a quiet evening paired with dessert.

Terroir & Winemaking

Made from multiple vintages of Merlot grown on the Makinai (Makiuchi) plateau in Tsuno Town, Miyazaki, blended across years and aged in oak barrels for approximately seven years. Dry, ABV 12%, 750ml. Because it is a multi-vintage blend rather than a single-harvest bottling, it carries no fixed vintage year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grape is Makiuchi Red made from?
It is made from Merlot grown on Tsuno Wine's own Makinai (Makiuchi) plateau estate vineyard in Miyazaki, blended across several vintages before oak aging.
How is Makiuchi Red different from Tsuno Wine's Private Reserve Syrah?
Both come from the same Makinai estate vineyard, but Private Reserve Syrah is a 100% single-vintage Syrah aged about 18 months in French oak. Makiuchi Red is instead a Merlot blended across multiple vintages and aged roughly seven years, giving it a darker, more oxidative dried-fruit and chocolate character in a lighter body, and it is a separate, newer release (launched December 2025) rather than the same wine under a different name.
When was Makiuchi Red released?
It went on pre-order on December 15, 2025 and began shipping on December 20, 2025 as a new addition to the Makinai Vineyard series.
What food pairs well with Makiuchi Red?
Lean red meats like grilled steak and roast beef, soy-simmered dishes such as sukiyaki, and dessert pairings like rum-laced chocolate cake.
