Miyazaki Prefecture sits on the Pacific coast of southeastern Kyushu, making it one of Japan's southernmost and warmest wine-producing areas. Viticulture here means working against a subtropical climate — heavy summer rainfall, high humidity, and typhoon risk — through careful canopy management and disease control. The region's flagship producer, Tsuno Wine in Tsuno Town, built an international reputation from the hardy Campbell Early grape as well as cool-adapted Chardonnay, earning recognition at overseas wine competitions. A short drive away, Aya Winery — Japan's southernmost winery, founded in 1994 by shochu maker Unkai Shuzo — crafts fresh, fruity, gently sweet wines from Campbell Early, Delaware, Niagara, and Black Olympia grapes using unpasteurized, cold-filled bottling. Together these producers show that Miyazaki's warm terroir yields approachable, food-friendly wines rather than the crisp, high-acid style typical of cooler Japanese regions.
Best for
Wine lovers curious about Japan's warm-climate terroir and approachable, semi-sweet to food-friendly styles.
Food Pairings
Miyazaki's own chicken nanban, fresh Pacific seafood, and dishes brightened with local hyuganatsu citrus; the fruitier styles also suit fresh Miyazaki mango desserts.

Gokase Winery
Founded in 2005 in Gokase Town, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, Gokase Winery sits atop a hill roughly 600-660 meters above sea level in the heart of the Kyushu mountains. The winery was built around the wish to make wine using 100% grapes grown by local farming families, whose fruit benefits from the area's dramatic day-night temperature swings and pure mountain water. Its lineup includes Niagara, Chardonnay, Delaware and Campbell Early alongside a Merlot-based red and a range of sparkling wines (Juju, Obu, Ryoka, Gekka). The winery has been recognized at the Japan Wine Competition (medals in 2014, 2018 and 2024) and won a silver medal and commendation at the 2018 International Wine Challenge (IWC) in the UK. Visitors can taste wines for free, view the production area, browse the on-site shop and produce hall, and dine at the attached restaurant Kumo-no-Ue-no-Budo, which serves a local-ingredient buffet with panoramic mountain views.

Katsuki Wines
Katsuki Wines is a boutique, family-run winery in Aya, Miyazaki — a Kyushu town registered as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its town-wide commitment to organic farming. Founder Yoshitada Katsuki trained for a decade in New Zealand's Marlborough region and at a family-run winery in Germany before returning home in 2013 to begin pesticide-free viticulture on inherited land, officially founding the winery in 2017. Defying skepticism that Kyushu's hot, humid, high-rainfall climate could ever support quality winemaking, Katsuki now hand-farms roughly 40 grape varieties — from Chardonnay and Merlot to native and hybrid vines — without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, fermenting with wild yeast and bottling without filtration.

Tsuno Wine
Tsuno Wine (Tsuno Wine Co., Ltd.) is a pioneering Japanese winery in Tsuno Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, on Kyushu's subtropical Pacific coast. Founded in February 1994 as a third-sector venture between the town, local farmers and the Osuzu Agricultural Cooperative to revitalize a region with few local specialties, the winery opened to the public in November 1996 after years of trial-and-error soil improvement on the rain-prone Makinai plateau. True to its founding belief that 'wine is the local sake of the land,' Tsuno Wine crafts every bottle from 100% Miyazaki-grown grapes — most famously Campbell Early, a table grape variety it transformed into signature sparkling and rosé wines that are now considered the winery's identity, alongside Muscat Bailey A, Chardonnay and Syrah grown across roughly 8.5 hectares of estate vineyards. Its wines have twice been selected among the World's Top 100 Wines by British critics, featured in The World Atlas of Wine, and have won gold medals and trophies at the Japan Wine Competition and Japan Wine Challenge.

Unkai Wine Brewery
Unkai Wine Brewery is the winemaking division of Unkai Shuzo, a shochu and sake producer founded in 1967 and headquartered in Miyazaki City. In 1994, Unkai Shuzo opened its grape wine facility — officially registered as Unkai Grape Wine Brewery and widely known as Aya Winery — inside the "Kuramoto Aya Shusen no Mori" visitor complex in Aya Town, an area famous for its broadleaf evergreen forest and pristine natural water. Rather than a separately licensed winery, wine production runs as one branch under Unkai Shuzo's own alcohol manufacturing license, alongside its shochu, sake, and brandy operations. Using 100% domestically grown grapes — chiefly the local specialty Black Olympia, along with Campbell Early, Delaware, Niagara and Muscat Bailey A — the winery favors low-temperature fermentation and unheated (cold) bottling to preserve fresh, fruit-forward aromas. Its wines have won gold and silver medals at the Japan Wine Challenge.
