Gekka ("moonlight") is the flagship white release from MORIUMIUS Farm & Winery, a wine project rebuilding an earthquake-hit district of Ogatsu, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture around a renovated schoolhouse. Grapes -- a blend of the hybrid varieties Seibel (52%), Delaware (35%), Neo Muscat (10%) and the rare table grape Rosario Bianco (3%) -- are hand-harvested from contract growers in Kaminoyama and Nanyo, Yamagata Prefecture, and Shiwa, Iwate Prefecture, then vinified at Fattoria AL FIORE in Kawasaki Town, Miyagi. Fermented with wild yeast only and bottled without added sulfites, filtration or fining. The wine shows a clear lemon-yellow color with tropical grapefruit and pineapple aromas lifted by a cooling, cinnamon-like herbal note; the palate carries a sweet, toasted hazelnut character where the four-grape blend's faint bitterness adds depth, framed by lively acidity and a light, food-friendly body.
A four-grape hybrid blend that proves Yamagata's contract-farmed table grapes can make a genuinely layered, food-friendly white -- Gekka's hazelnut warmth and bright acidity punch well above its modest price.
New to wine?
A gentle, aromatic entry point into Japanese natural wine -- light-bodied, faintly nutty and easy to enjoy without any funky or challenging edges.
Food Pairings
Excellent with white fish and pale meats -- try it with pan-seared or poached white fish, grilled chicken, and scallop carpaccio. It also stands up to oilier dishes such as Chinese-style stir-fries, oyster gratin, and chicken ham salad. Serve at 10-12°C.
When to drink it
Everyday dinners with fish or chicken, izakaya-style small plates, or as a conversation piece about post-disaster recovery winemaking in Tohoku.
