Tsunami-recovery natural wines from Miyagi's Sanriku coast

MORIUMIUS Farm & Winery is a wine project based in Ogatsu, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture — a coastal district devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and rebuilt around a renovated school building that now serves as an education and agriculture hub. Since 2020, the team has partnered with natural wine producer Fattoria AL FIORE in nearby Kawasaki Town to make additive-free, wild-yeast fermented wines using grapes sourced from contract growers in Yamagata and Iwate, while planting its own vineyard in Ogatsu (from 2024) for future estate-grown releases. Wines are named after the shifting light of the Sanriku coastline — Gekka (moonlight, white), Yokou (twilight, orange), Hana Akari (blossom light, rosé sparkling), and Akane Sora (crimson sky, red) — and have been available since the 2021 vintage through retailers such as IMADEYA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has MORIUMIUS Farm & Winery released any wine?
Yes — it has released natural wines under labels such as Gekka, Yokou, Hana Akari, and Akane Sora since the 2021 vintage, though the grapes are currently sourced from contract farms in Yamagata and Iwate rather than its own vineyard.
Where does MORIUMIUS source its grapes?
While its own vineyard in Ogatsu, Ishinomaki is being developed, grapes are purchased from contract growers in Yamagata and Iwate prefectures and fermented at Fattoria AL FIORE in Kawasaki Town, Miyagi.
What is the story behind MORIUMIUS?
The project grew out of the recovery effort after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, converting a disused school in Ogatsu, Ishinomaki into an educational and agricultural hub, of which winemaking is one part.
Are MORIUMIUS wines natural or organic?
Yes — the wines are fermented with wild yeast and made without added sulfites or filtration.
When will MORIUMIUS release wine made from its own estate-grown grapes?
The Ogatsu vineyard was planted starting in 2024, with estate-grown releases expected once the vines mature in the coming years.
