Founded in May 1991 by Kinoshita International, a long-established importer of wines from around the world, Chateau Sakaori Winery sits on a hillside in Sakaori, Kofu City, overlooking the Kofu Basin — the heartland of Japanese winemaking. Drawing on its parent company's global wine network, the winery applies internationally informed techniques to Japan's own indigenous grapes, above all Koshu and Muscat Bailey A, while also growing Chardonnay and Syrah on its own vineyards. Its guiding principle is a 'growers first' partnership: grape sources and prices are disclosed openly, and no uniform standard is imposed on the farmers who supply the fruit. The result is wine meant for everyday tables — reasonably priced, food-friendly, and quietly ambitious, as shown by a Koshu Dry served at the 2016 G7 Ise-Shima Summit and repeated gold medals at the Japan Wine Competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grape varieties is Chateau Sakaori known for?
The winery centers its production on Koshu, Japan's signature white grape, and Muscat Bailey A, its most widely planted red, while also growing Chardonnay and Syrah on its own vineyards.
Who founded Chateau Sakaori Winery?
It was established in May 1991 by Kinoshita International, a Japanese importer of wines from around the world, which still supplies the winery with global winemaking know-how.
What is the winery's winemaking philosophy?
Chateau Sakaori follows a "growers first" approach, disclosing the source and price of every grape lot and working in partnership with local farmers rather than imposing rigid quality standards on them.
What food pairs well with Chateau Sakaori's Koshu?
Because Koshu is mild and unassuming, it pairs naturally with sashimi, sushi, tempura, ponzu-dressed hot pot, and simmered vegetable dishes without overpowering delicate Japanese flavors.
Has Chateau Sakaori received recognition?
Yes — its Koshu Dry was served at the 2016 G7 Ise-Shima Summit, and wines such as the Cuvée Ikegawa Muscat Bailey A have won gold medals at the Japan Wine Competition.
