Japan's smallest winery, pioneering estate-grown Pinot Noir
Located at 47 Sakurai-cho in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Domaine Q (also known as "Dom. Q" or "Domaine Kyu") is operated by Kofu Wine Port Co., Ltd. and was established in 2000, taking its name from a character in founder Kubodera's surname. Renowned as one of Japan's smallest, most consolidated wineries, it is also home to one of the country's largest estate-owned Pinot Noir vineyards -- a variety notoriously difficult to grow in Japan's humid climate. The roughly 25,000 square meter south-facing estate vineyard sits on well-draining, stony granite soil on slopes overlooking the Kofu Basin, benefiting from strong sun exposure and cooling winds off the Southern Alps. Beyond Pinot Noir, the winery crafts wine from Koshu, Muscat Bailey A, Neo Muscat, and early-harvest green Delaware grapes, and operates an on-site steakhouse restaurant, "Bordeaux."
