Cantina Zio Setto
カンティーナ・ジーオセット
Rare Italian varietals grown vigneron-style in Niigata
Cantina Zio Setto is a boutique winery on the Niigata Wine Coast, founded in 2011 by Kiyoshi Seto, a former advertising executive who left a 26-year career in Tokyo at age 49 to become a vigneron. After training in viticulture and winemaking at neighboring Cave d'Occi, Seto established his own small estate on the sand dunes of Kakudahama, facing the Sea of Japan. The roughly one-hectare vineyard is planted with grape varieties still rare in Japan — Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Lambrusco — alongside Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muscat Bailey A. Seto's guiding philosophy is that of the vigneron: living on the land itself, attuned to the morning rain, shifting wind, and scent of the air that cannot be understood by simply commuting to the vineyard. This close, daily relationship with Kakudahama's coastal terroir shapes fruit-forward, food-friendly wines that have earned the winery recognition as a "Connoisseur's Winery" at the Japan Winery Award for three consecutive years from 2020.
