Cantina Zio Setto is a boutique winery in the Kakudahama district of Nishikan-ku, Niigata City, on the Sea of Japan coast. Founded in December 2011 by Kiyoshi Seto — a former advertising executive who trained at Cave d'Occi before starting his own label — it is one of five independent producers that make up the Niigata Wine Coast, alongside Cave d'Occi, Fermier, Domaine Chaud and Le Cinq Winery. Farming roughly one hectare of estate vines, Zio Setto is unusually red-focused for a Japanese winery: about 90% of its output is red, built mainly around Zweigelt alongside the Italian varieties Nebbiolo, Barbera and Lambrusco, plus Muscat Bailey A — the first winery on the Wine Coast to work with that grape. Inspired by Italy's culture of food-first, regionally rooted wine, Seto crafts wines designed to complete a meal rather than stand alone.
