About this wine

Monteficalle is Montefioralle's Super Tuscan-style IGT Toscana, born from an idea Fernando Sieni had in the 1980s to work with international grape varieties alongside the estate's Sangiovese. Named after the ancient name of Montefioralle village ('Monteficalle', or 'Mountain of Figs'), the current blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, sourced from plots more than 30 years old and matured 24 months in small used oak barrels. Because it relies on international varieties rather than Sangiovese, it falls outside the Chianti Classico DOCG and is classified as IGT Toscana.

Beginner's Note

For drinkers who enjoy Bordeaux-style Cabernet-Merlot blends but want to try one grown on Chianti Classico soil.

Sommelier's Note

"Monteficalle is Montefioralle's most international expression — proof that a family estate rooted in Sangiovese can also make a convincing, terroir-driven Cabernet-Merlot blend without losing its sense of place."

Food Pairings

Pairs beautifully with Tuscan cured meats such as prosciutto di Toscana, and stands up well to grilled red meats and firm aged cheeses.

When to drink it

Gifting to Super Tuscan enthusiasts, dinners centered on grilled or cured red meats.
