Montefioralle
モンテフィオラッレ
Elegant, floral Sangiovese from a medieval hilltop UGA above Greve.
Montefioralle is one of the 11 officially recognized Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive (UGA) of the Chianti Classico DOCG, established in 2021. Though its vineyards lie within the comune of Greve in Chianti and take their name from the fortified medieval hamlet at their center (founded in the 11th century and once headquarters of the Lega del Chianti in 1250), Montefioralle is a distinct, independently recognized UGA rather than a subdivision of the Greve UGA — the two are adjacent, sibling geographic units under Chianti Classico. The second-smallest of the 11 UGAs, its vineyards run along the ridge dividing the Greve and Pesa valleys, at altitudes from roughly 200m at the Greve riverbed up to 540m near Passo Testalepre. Soils combine pietraforte sandstone (concentrated near the Panzano border and the village itself) with alberese and galestro clay-limestone. The resulting Sangiovese-based wines are prized for softer, refined tannins, bright floral aromatics, and savory, spice-tinged fruit — elegant rather than powerful, gaining structure and complexity with elevation. Along with Lamole and Vagliagli, Montefioralle's UGA name only becomes eligible for wine labels from the 2024 vintage (releasing 2027), three years after the other UGAs.
Best for: Drinkers who favor refined, floral, softer-tannin Chianti Classico over powerful, structured styles.

Altiero in Chianti
Altiero in Chianti is a small, family-run organic winery in the hamlet of Montefioralle, within the Greve in Chianti commune at the heart of Chianti Classico. Owner Paolo Baldini named the estate after his grandfather Altiero, a local farmer. The family began making wine for personal use in 1984; Paolo's father Maurizio turned it into a commercial venture in 2001, and Paolo took over the estate in 2005 after training in agriculture. Farming is organic, with all vineyard plots located entirely within the Montefioralle sub-zone, prized for its mineral-rich soils, favorable microclimate, and hillside exposure. Vines are predominantly young Sangiovese alongside some parcels over 30 years old, plus a small amount of Merlot used for a single-varietal IGT bottling called Burrasca. The estate produces Chianti Classico Annata, Riserva, and Gran Selezione, a Rosato, IGT wines, extra virgin olive oil, and a small line of organic cosmetics. About 80% of production is sold directly from the winery, with cellar tours and tastings offered by appointment.

Azienda Agricola Montefioralle
Azienda Agricola Montefioralle is a small, family-run winery perched just below the medieval hilltop village of Montefioralle, within the commune of Greve in Chianti at the heart of Chianti Classico. Founded in 1964 when Renato Sieni took over vineyards that had belonged to the local parish for centuries, the estate is now run by the third generation of the Sieni family, siblings Alessia and Lorenzo. Farming just under 4 hectares of vines and certified organic since 2019, Montefioralle keeps production deliberately small (under 15,000 bottles a year) to focus on traditional, low-intervention winemaking: fermentation in concrete and aging in old oak barriques. The range centers on Sangiovese-driven Chianti Classico DOCG, Riserva, Gran Selezione, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, and limited-edition Super Tuscan bottlings such as Il Guerrino.

Le Palaie
Le Palaie is a small, family-run winery in the historic hamlet of Montefioralle, on the hills overlooking Greve in Chianti. Founded in 1993 by Marco Bussotti, the estate cultivates around 2 hectares of vineyards (Sangiovese Grosso alongside small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) and 3 hectares of olive groves, now cared for by Marco's son David and grandson Andrea. The winery favors low-intervention, traditional methods that respect the Alberese and Galestro soils typical of Montefioralle, producing Chianti Classico DOCG and IGT Toscana wines together with extra virgin olive oil. Le Palaie is a member of the Associazione Viticoltori Montefioralle, which promotes the distinct character of this Chianti Classico sub-zone, and regularly participates in the association's Montefioralle Divino festival.

Villa Calcinaia
Villa Calcinaia is a historic Chianti Classico estate near the medieval hamlet of Montefioralle, in the comune of Greve in Chianti, held by the Capponi family since 1524. Today it is run by Count Sebastiano Capponi (with his brother Niccolò), who has managed the property since 1992 and converted it to organic farming, with grapes certified organic from the 2014 vintage. The roughly 30 hectares (about 75 acres) of vineyard are planted mainly to Sangiovese, alongside Canaiolo, Merlot and small amounts of white varieties. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, then aged separately by vineyard block in large casks and tonneaux. Villa Calcinaia is a founding member of the Associazione Viticoltori Montefioralle, a group of about 14 producers dedicated to championing the distinct character of wines from the Montefioralle UGA (Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva) of Chianti Classico. The estate produces Chianti Classico DOCG, Riserva and single-vineyard Gran Selezione bottlings, alongside olive oil and honey.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Montefioralle part of the Greve UGA?
- No. Although its vineyards lie within the comune of Greve in Chianti, Montefioralle is one of the 11 officially recognized Chianti Classico UGAs in its own right, distinct and separate from the neighboring Greve UGA.
- What makes Montefioralle Sangiovese distinctive?
- Its mix of pietraforte sandstone and alberese-galestro soils, combined with altitudes up to 540m, produces Sangiovese with softer tannins, floral aromatics, and savory, spice-tinged fruit rather than raw power.
- When can Montefioralle appear on wine labels?
- Montefioralle is one of three UGAs (with Lamole and Vagliagli) required to wait until the 2024 vintage, released in 2027, before the UGA name can legally appear on labels — three years later than the other eight UGAs.
- What is the historical significance of the village of Montefioralle?
- The fortified hamlet dates to the 11th century and in 1250 served as headquarters of the Lega del Chianti (League of the Greve Valley). It is also linked by tradition to the Vespucci family, whose house still stands on its circular main street.
