Margheria is one of the most celebrated MGA crus of Serralunga d'Alba, and Azelia's holding sits on a southwest-facing slope of poor, white clay soil opposite the famed Perno vineyard, forcing vines — averaging 65 years old — to root deep. Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino extend maceration up to 60 days and age the wine in large casks for 30 months, resulting in a Barolo that is dense, powerful and structured, yet retains real freshness.

Sommelier's Note

Among the most powerful crus in Azelia's lineup — dense and saline, with the structure to reward a decade or more in the cellar.

New to wine?

A bold, savory Barolo that shows what Serralunga power tastes like — best approached with a decanter and patience.

Food Pairings

Its power and savory minerality call for braised game, bollito misto, or hard aged cheeses like Bitto or aged Parmigiano.

When to drink it

Long dinners with braised meats, cellar aging, serious wine gatherings

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Margheria distinctive among Azelia's Barolos?
It's sourced from Serralunga d'Alba rather than Castiglione Falletto, giving it more density, dark fruit, and savory, saline minerality compared to the estate's Castiglione crus.
Should I decant this wine?
Yes — given its extended maceration and firm tannins, decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth.
How does it compare to Azelia's San Rocco?
Margheria tends to show darker fruit, tar and more structural power, while San Rocco leans toward dried red fruit and iron-like minerality — both share Serralunga's savory backbone.
