Villa Calcinaia
ヴィッラ・カルチナイア
500-year-old Capponi family estate, founding member of the Montefioralle producers' group.
Villa Calcinaia is a historic Chianti Classico estate near the medieval hamlet of Montefioralle, in the comune of Greve in Chianti, held by the Capponi family since 1524. Today it is run by Count Sebastiano Capponi (with his brother Niccolò), who has managed the property since 1992 and converted it to organic farming, with grapes certified organic from the 2014 vintage. The roughly 30 hectares (about 75 acres) of vineyard are planted mainly to Sangiovese, alongside Canaiolo, Merlot and small amounts of white varieties. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, then aged separately by vineyard block in large casks and tonneaux. Villa Calcinaia is a founding member of the Associazione Viticoltori Montefioralle, a group of about 14 producers dedicated to championing the distinct character of wines from the Montefioralle UGA (Unità Geografica Aggiuntiva) of Chianti Classico. The estate produces Chianti Classico DOCG, Riserva and single-vineyard Gran Selezione bottlings, alongside olive oil and honey.
