Altiero in Chianti is a small, family-run organic winery in the hamlet of Montefioralle, within the Greve in Chianti commune at the heart of Chianti Classico. Owner Paolo Baldini named the estate after his grandfather Altiero, a local farmer. The family began making wine for personal use in 1984; Paolo's father Maurizio turned it into a commercial venture in 2001, and Paolo took over the estate in 2005 after training in agriculture. Farming is organic, with all vineyard plots located entirely within the Montefioralle sub-zone, prized for its mineral-rich soils, favorable microclimate, and hillside exposure. Vines are predominantly young Sangiovese alongside some parcels over 30 years old, plus a small amount of Merlot used for a single-varietal IGT bottling called Burrasca. The estate produces Chianti Classico Annata, Riserva, and Gran Selezione, a Rosato, IGT wines, extra virgin olive oil, and a small line of organic cosmetics. About 80% of production is sold directly from the winery, with cellar tours and tastings offered by appointment.
