Yellow Magic Winery

Hokujo

About this wine

Alternative Rouge is a distinctive red wine from Yellow Magic Winery in Nanyo, Yamagata Prefecture, crafted from 100% Hokujo (北醇) — a Japanese hybrid of Amurensis and Muscat Hamburg. Named for 'unchanging things and the inevitability that leaves no other choice,' the wine is fermented on skins for 60 days with gentle battonage every two days to encourage natural malolactic fermentation. The result is a vibrant, deep-purple wine with only 9% alcohol, where wild-berry intensity meets lively acidity and a silky, barely-there tannic grip. No sulfites are added. The wine is enjoyable young and has clear potential for aging.

Beginner's Note

Think light-bodied red with bright berry flavors — if you love Beaujolais or chilled reds, this is your Japanese gateway wine.

Sommelier's Note

"The benchmark Japanese Hokujo red — its 60-day maceration coaxes wild-berry depth from a hybrid grape that most would write off, and the result consistently outperforms its modest price."

Food Pairings

Excellent with duck breast, game meats, smoked poultry, and charcuterie. The bright acidity and light tannins also make it surprisingly versatile with umami-rich Japanese dishes.

When to drink it

Casual dinner with friends, outdoor barbecues, izakaya-style sharing plates, or a chilled summer red moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Alternative Rouge taste like?
Vivid cranberry and wild strawberry aromas, a touch herbal, with a light body, bright acidity, soft effervescence, and gentle tannins — think Beaujolais Nouveau meets Japanese mountain grape.
What food pairs best with Alternative Rouge?
Duck, game meats, and smoked chicken are the winemaker's top picks; it also shines alongside soy-glazed chicken, miso-braised pork, and rich Japanese stews.
Why is the alcohol only 9%?
The Hokujo grape has naturally lower sugar levels and higher acidity. The long, cool-temperature maceration preserves freshness while extracting color and flavor without pushing alcohol higher.
Can Alternative Rouge be aged?
Yes — the deep purple color and natural acidity signal solid aging potential. Most drinkers enjoy it young for its lively freshness, but it rewards 3–5 years of cellaring.
Is Alternative Rouge a natural wine?
Yes. It is made with wild yeasts, no added sulfites, and minimal intervention — fully in line with Yellow Magic Winery's philosophy of 'neither add nor subtract.'
