About this wine
A single-vineyard Gran Selezione from a 4.5-hectare plot at 450 meters on clay-rich soils, blending 95% Sangiovese with 5% Colorino. First produced in 1988 and elevated to Gran Selezione status in 2011, Il Picchio is known for a more austere, structured expression of Sangiovese than its sister wine La Corte.
Not a beginner wine — this is for those who already enjoy structured, tannic Sangiovese.
Sommelier's Note
"Il Picchio is Querceto's most muscular wine — a Sangiovese built for the cellar, not the first pour of the evening."
Food Pairings
The firmer tannic grip suits bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, and long-aged Parmigiano Reggiano.
When to drink it
Steakhouse dinners, game meat dishes, wines meant to age
