Muga Selección Especial sits between the classic Reserva and the flagship Torre Muga and Prado Enea, made only in the best vintages from a stricter selection of grapes grown on Tertiary clay-limestone terraces at 430-450m. The blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano is aged around 26 months in barrels crafted at Muga's own cooperage — roughly six months in new French oak followed by two years in older French and American oak (about 70/30) — then clarified with egg white and rested in bottle for at least a year. Aromas of cassis and black raspberry mingle with graphite, violets, spicy wood and pencil-lead notes, leading to a medium-to-full-bodied palate with a round, layered texture and silky tannins — a fresher, more fruit-forward, modern-leaning expression than the classic Reserva.
The sweet spot in the Muga range — more depth and polish than Reserva, at a fraction of Torre Muga's price.
