Tsugane La Montagne Trance

ツガネ ラ・モンターニュ トランス

Beau Paysage

Merlot

About this wine

A lighter, more immediately drinkable expression of Merlot from the Tsugane site. Described as the most accessible and enjoyable red in the lineup. Limited to 200 bottles.

Beginner's Note

A fruity and light-bodied style that is surprisingly approachable even for natural wine newcomers.

Sommelier's Note

"True to its name 'Trance', this bottle holds both the translucency to lull you into a reverie and the complexity to keep you there. It was genuinely surprising to encounter Merlot expressed this delicately in Japan. It carries all the power of La Montagne while adding the depth and concentration of deeply-colored fruit selection—same variety, same plot, yet an entirely different universe. Treasure it when you find one."

Food Pairings

Pairs beautifully with game meats such as venison and duck roast, charcuterie (ham, pâté), and mushroom risotto. With Japanese cuisine, it shines alongside yakitori, braised pork belly (kakuni), simmered vegetables (takiawase), and mushroom clear soup—dishes where dashi and umami are the star.

When to drink it

Casual lunches, picnics, and home dinner parties where you want to share something special.

Terroir & Winemaking

100% Merlot from the Tsugane vineyard of Beau Paysage. Crafted from only the most deeply colored, concentrated berries hand-selected from the same plot as the standard 'La Montagne'. Winemaking follows Beau Paysage's uncompromising philosophy: wild yeast fermentation, no temperature control, no sulphur additions, no filtration, and gravity bottling. Production is approximately 200 bottles, making it one of the rarest cuvées in the lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it different from La Montagne?
Both are 100% Merlot from the same Tsugane vineyard, but Trance is a special pressing made exclusively from the most deeply colored, concentrated berries. The result is greater intensity and complexity than the regular 'La Montagne', and production is even more limited at around 200 bottles.
What does it taste like?
Layers of red fruit (cherry, plum) mingle with notes of tea and dried flowers, balanced by fine-grained tannins and lively acidity that create a long, satisfying finish. It has the translucency of Pinot Noir while retaining the depth and concentration characteristic of Merlot—a rare combination.
What food pairs best with it?
Game meats (venison, duck roast), mushroom risotto, and charcuterie are classic pairings. For Japanese food, yakitori (both salt and tare styles), braised pork belly, and simmered vegetable dishes are excellent matches.
