Sorachi

空知

Japan's natural wine incubator with extreme diurnal swings

Sorachi is Hokkaido's inland wine heartland, centered around the cities of Iwamizawa, Mikasa, and the town of Urausu, located roughly midway between Sapporo and Asahikawa. The region experiences a strongly continental climate with large diurnal temperature swings of up to 10°C during the growing season — cool nights preserve acidity and build aromatic complexity while warm days accelerate ripening. Heavy winter snowfall (averaging 4–8 meters) acts as an insulating blanket for dormant vines. Sorachi is home to 10R Winery (Iwamizawa), founded by American winemaker Bruce Gutlove in 2009, which operates as Japan's pioneering custom-crush facility and has incubated acclaimed labels such as Nora Kura, Domaine Toi, and Domaine Bless. Other notable producers include Yamazaki Winery, KONDO Vineyard (Domaine KONDO), Hosui Winery, and TAKIZAWA WINERY. Urausu Town hosts the Tsuruma Vineyard of Hokkaido Wine Co. Ltd., Japan's largest single vineyard at over 447 hectares growing some 40 varieties. Dominant red varieties are Pinot Noir and Zweigelt; white varieties include Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, and Bacchus. Low-intervention, minimal-sulphite winemaking is a hallmark of the region's philosophy.

Best for: Elegant, cool-climate reds like Pinot Noir and Zweigelt with bright acidity; crisp aromatic whites from Kerner and Müller-Thurgau; minimal-intervention natural wines with genuine terroir expression.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Sorachi wines different from Yoichi wines?
Sorachi sits inland in Hokkaido's central zone, giving it a more continental climate with stronger diurnal temperature swings (up to 10°C day-night difference) compared to the coastal, maritime-influenced Yoichi. Sorachi reds tend toward firmer structure and darker fruit, while Yoichi is better known for lighter, more delicate styles. Sorachi is also Hokkaido's natural wine hub, with 10R Winery at its center.
What grape varieties grow best in Sorachi?
Pinot Noir and Zweigelt are the leading red varieties, producing wines with lively acidity and bright fruit. For whites, Kerner and Müller-Thurgau thrive in the cool climate, delivering crisp aromatics and refreshing minerality. Pinot Gris and Bacchus also show promise in the region.
What is 10R Winery and why is it significant?
10R Winery (Iwamizawa) was established in 2009 by American winemaker Bruce Gutlove, making it Japan's first and foremost custom-crush facility. Winemakers without their own cellars can contract 10R to vinify their grapes, giving emerging Sorachi vignerons access to world-class equipment and Gutlove's expertise. Alumni labels — Nora Kura, Domaine Toi, Domaine Bless — are now among Japan's most sought-after natural wines.
Does Sorachi have a lot of snow? How does it affect the vines?
Yes. Urausu Town in Sorachi averages 8 meters of annual snowfall. Far from being a problem, the deep snowpack acts as natural insulation that protects vine roots and lower trunk from extreme winter cold (-20°C or below). Vines are typically trained low and buried under snow or covered with straw mats in winter, a technique that is almost unique to Hokkaido among major wine regions worldwide.
Is Sorachi wine easy to find outside Hokkaido?
Sorachi wines are produced in small quantities and allocation-based. In Hokkaido, the Sorachi Wine Station in Iwamizawa and select wine shops stock the full range. Outside Hokkaido, specialist Japanese wine retailers in Tokyo and online platforms such as nippon.wine carry curated selections. Internationally, importers focused on Japanese natural wine increasingly list 10R and its alumni labels.
