Arnaldo Caprai
Sagrantino
About this wine
Collepiano is Arnaldo Caprai's benchmark, single-vineyard-driven Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, first released with the 1980s vintages and now the winery's most widely distributed 100% Sagrantino. Grapes come from the gently sloping ('colle piano') estate vineyards around Montefalco. Fermentation runs about 15 days in stainless steel with extended maceration, followed by 22 months in French oak barrique and a minimum of 6 months in bottle. The result is a powerful, structured red with blackberry, vanilla, black pepper, and clove aromas, firm tannins, and a long, savory finish that rewards a decade or more of cellaring.
A full-bodied, high-tannin red — decant at least an hour before serving and pair with rich, fatty foods to soften the grip of the tannins.
Sommelier's Note
"Collepiano is the purest expression of Sagrantino's power — if the 25 Anni is Caprai's showpiece, Collepiano is the everyday proof of why Montefalco deserves DOCG status."
Food Pairings
A natural match for grilled or braised game, lamb shank, porcini mushroom dishes, and aged pecorino. Its firm tannins also stand up well to charcuterie and hard, aged cheeses.
When to drink it
Special dinners, cheese and game pairings, cellar-worthy gifts for wine collectors.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Collepiano taste like?
- Expect intense blackberry, vanilla, black pepper, and clove aromas, backed by powerful, chewy tannins and a long, slightly bitter-edged finish typical of 100% Sagrantino.
- How is Collepiano different from Caprai's 25 Anni?
- Both are 100% Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, but 25 Anni is sourced from the winery's best parcels with a longer aging regime and is positioned as the flagship, while Collepiano is the broader estate bottling — still powerful, but slightly more approachable and more widely available.
- Does Collepiano need decanting?
- Yes — due to its firm tannic structure, decanting for at least 60-90 minutes before serving is strongly recommended, especially for younger vintages.

Arnaldo Caprai Grecante Grechetto Colli Martani
WhiteGrechetto
Grecante is Arnaldo Caprai's flagship white, made from 100% Grechetto grown in the Colli Martani DOC around Montefalco, first produced in 1989. The grapes are gently pressed and fermented at low temperature in stainless steel, followed by about three months on the lees and a minimum of three months in bottle. The wine shows an aromatic bouquet of exotic fruit, yellow peach, and delicate freesia and hawthorn floral notes, with a fresh, full palate of green apple and citrus, a subtle almond note, and a pleasant chalky, mineral finish — the 2015 vintage was named to Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year.

Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso
RedSangiovese · Sagrantino · Merlot
Montefalco Rosso DOC is Arnaldo Caprai's approachable, everyday red — a blend of roughly 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, and 15% Merlot. The small percentage of Sagrantino adds structure and dark-fruit depth to the Sangiovese base, while Merlot rounds out the mid-palate. Aged about 12 months in French oak barriques and at least 4-6 months in bottle, it shows bright ruby color, aromas of ripe plum and vanilla, and a medium-to-full body with softer tannins than Caprai's pure Sagrantino wines, making it a versatile introduction to the Montefalco style.

Arnaldo Caprai Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni
RedSagrantino
Arnaldo Caprai's flagship wine, the 25 Anni, is a masterpiece of Umbrian viticulture. First produced with the 1993 vintage to celebrate the winery's 25th anniversary, this 100% Sagrantino is sourced from the finest vineyard parcels in Montefalco. Extended aging in French oak barriques results in a wine of immense power, structure, and complexity. Intense aromas of blackberry, spice, and tobacco are framed by a velvety yet firm tannic backbone—the highest polyphenol content of any Italian red grape—promising exceptional longevity of 15–20 years.
