Arnaldo Caprai

Sagrantino

About this wine

Arnaldo Caprai's flagship wine, the 25 Anni, is a masterpiece of Umbrian viticulture. First produced with the 1993 vintage to celebrate the winery's 25th anniversary, this 100% Sagrantino is sourced from the finest vineyard parcels in Montefalco. Extended aging in French oak barriques results in a wine of immense power, structure, and complexity. Intense aromas of blackberry, spice, and tobacco are framed by a velvety yet firm tannic backbone—the highest polyphenol content of any Italian red grape—promising exceptional longevity of 15–20 years.

Beginner's Note

This is an extremely powerful, full-bodied red wine with very firm tannins—quite different from lighter reds. Decant for at least two hours before serving to allow the intense tannins to soften and the complex aromas to open up.

Sommelier's Note

"The definitive expression of Sagrantino. With its remarkable polyphenol density and aging potential, this wine belongs in the conversation with Italy's greatest reds—Barolo and Brunello included. A must-experience for any serious wine lover."

Food Pairings

Pairs perfectly with rich game dishes (wild boar, venison), roasted lamb, aged pecorino and truffle-based recipes. Its robust tannic structure also stands up superbly to hearty Umbrian meat stews.

When to drink it

Ideal for milestone celebrations, formal dinners, or as the centrepiece of a serious collector's tasting. Best opened at least 10 years after vintage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Arnaldo Caprai 25 Anni taste like?
It features intense notes of dark berries, black cherry, cocoa, tobacco, and exotic spices, with a very firm, structured tannic finish that softens beautifully with age.
When is the best time to drink it?
It is best enjoyed 10 to 20 years after the vintage date when the tannins have fully integrated. Decant for at least 2 hours even with mature bottles.
Does it need decanting?
Yes—decanting for at least two hours is essential. The powerful tannins need time to soften and the complex aromas need room to breathe before the wine shows its true personality.
