Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso

アルナルド・カプライ モンテファルコ・ロッソ

Arnaldo Caprai

Sangiovese · Sagrantino · Merlot

About this wine

Montefalco Rosso DOC is Arnaldo Caprai's approachable, everyday red — a blend of roughly 70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino, and 15% Merlot. The small percentage of Sagrantino adds structure and dark-fruit depth to the Sangiovese base, while Merlot rounds out the mid-palate. Aged about 12 months in French oak barriques and at least 4-6 months in bottle, it shows bright ruby color, aromas of ripe plum and vanilla, and a medium-to-full body with softer tannins than Caprai's pure Sagrantino wines, making it a versatile introduction to the Montefalco style.

Beginner's Note

A friendly, medium-bodied red with only a touch of Sagrantino's grip — a great gateway into Umbrian reds before trying Caprai's pure Sagrantino bottlings.

Sommelier's Note

"Montefalco Rosso is the wine that proves Sagrantino doesn't have to be intimidating — a small dose of it here does more heavy lifting for structure than most single-varietal Sangiovese ever could."

Food Pairings

Versatile with grilled sausages, roasted pork, tomato-based pasta, and semi-aged cheeses — an easy everyday pairing wine.

When to drink it

Casual weeknight dinners, pizza and pasta nights, everyday Italian-style meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Montefalco Rosso taste like?
Ripe plum, dark cherry, and vanilla aromas lead to a medium-to-full-bodied palate with soft-to-firm tannins, bright acidity, and a juicy, food-friendly finish.
Is Montefalco Rosso the same as Sagrantino di Montefalco?
No — Montefalco Rosso DOC is a blend led by Sangiovese with only about 15% Sagrantino, while Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG (such as Collepiano or 25 Anni) is 100% Sagrantino and considerably more powerful and tannic.
What food goes well with Montefalco Rosso?
It pairs easily with grilled meats, tomato-based pasta, pizza, and semi-aged cheeses, and works well with Japanese dishes like teriyaki chicken or sukiyaki.
