Sancerre is an AOC in the Cher département, in the Centre-Loire part of the Loire Valley. White wines are made from Sauvignon Blanc, and red and rosé wines from Pinot Noir. The appellation was recognised in 1936 for white wines and in 1959 for red and rosé wines. The vineyards cover 14 communes. Three main soil types are distinguished: clay-limestone soils known as terres blanches, limestone soils known as caillottes, and clay soils containing flint (silex).
