Assemblage Rouge is Tainai Kogen Winery's signature red blend, combining Merlot with the cold-hardy Zweigelt grown on the estate's steep, wind-swept slopes in Niigata's Tainai highlands. Unlike the winery's single-varietal Zweigelt, this cuvée blends the two red varieties to balance Merlot's structure with Zweigelt's bright fruit. Expect aromas of blackcurrant and wild strawberry layered with subtle shiso and eucalyptus-like herbal notes, framed by generous fruit and refreshing acidity that keeps the finish clean and easy-drinking.

Sommelier's Note

This blend shows how well Zweigelt performs when paired with Merlot's structure — a distinctly Niigata take on an easy-drinking red blend.

New to wine?

An easy, food-friendly introduction to Japanese red blends — fruity, balanced, and never heavy.

Food Pairings

A versatile food wine: grilled or roasted red meats, duck, and hard cheeses all work well, and the bright acidity also suits richer Japanese dishes such as sukiyaki, grilled eel (unagi), and simmered pork.

When to drink it

Everyday dinners, casual gatherings with grilled meats, and Japanese home cooking.

Terroir & Winemaking

Blend of Merlot and Zweigelt grown on a steep, sun-facing south-southwest slope at roughly 250m elevation at the foot of the Iide mountains, where strong winds keep humidity and disease pressure low. ABV 12.5%.
