Shion Winery is a micro-winery in Makioka, Yamanashi City, in the eastern Koto district of Yamanashi Prefecture. Founded in 2007 as an offshoot of a Yokohama kindergarten's nature-education program, it turns Makioka's famous sweet Kyoho table grapes -- along with Muscat Bailey A and other varieties from local contract farmers -- into dry, food-friendly Japanese wines. Production is tiny (around 11 tanks and 4 barrels) and every label is hand-applied, each carrying a flower motif such as hydrangea, sunflower, rose or Casablanca lily. The winery does not offer regular tastings or tours, opening only for a handful of events each year.
Who Is This For?
For drinkers curious about Japan's lesser-known table-grape wines, and anyone who wants an easygoing, dry bottle that pairs naturally with everyday Japanese home cooking.
