A structured, easy-drinking field-blend red from Sanyo Wine's own severely yield-restricted vineyard in Makioka, Yamanashi City, co-fermenting 12 grape varieties led by Merlot (48%), Armo Noir (17%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Petit Manseng (5%), rounded out by Kai Noir, Bijou Noir, Albariño, Syrah, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Muscat of Alexandria and Pinot Noir. Fermented with grape stems retained to draw out complexity, then bottled unfiltered with no added sulfites. Reserved on opening, it opens into sweet berry and pomegranate aromas, with a light, easy-drinking palate and a lingering finish. The wine's name draws on the Finnish word 'mäki' (hill), a nod to the European varieties grown on Makioka's slopes.
Twelve varieties, one vineyard, zero shortcuts — mäkioka proves a field-blend red doesn't need weight to have character.
