Founded in 2018 in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, Le Milieu was the first winery certified under the 'Northern Alps / Azumino Wine Valley Special Zone.' It was co-founded by Go Shioze and Sho Saito, both born in 1987, who handle grape growing and winemaking from start to finish. Their main vineyard, Tennoubara, was reclaimed from abandoned mulberry fields and overgrown woodland at roughly 600m elevation on a west-facing slope of the Northern Alps, offering low rainfall and wide diurnal temperature swings ideal for viticulture. The winery focuses on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Niagara, Pinot Noir and the rare local Ryugan variety, producing around 12,000 bottles a year with minimal additives and hands-on, small-batch methods. The name 'Le Milieu' means 'the center' in French, reflecting their wish for their wine to sit at the center of the dining table and in the hearts of the people who drink it.
