Kobe Wine Extra Red is the oak-aged red in Hakutsuru Shuzo Kobe Winery's mid-tier 'Extra' line, sitting between the everyday 'Kobe Wine' series and the limited-vintage 'Kobe Reserva' series. Made from 100% Kobe-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot hand-harvested from contracted and estate vineyards around the Rokko foothills in Kobe's Nishi and Kita wards, it is aged in oak barrels to a medium body. Cabernet Sauvignon's firm tannin and structure combine with Merlot's softer tannin and fragrant aromatics for a complex palate with a delicate balance of acidity and tannin.

Sommelier's Note

The Extra line is where Kobe Wine's Cabernet Sauvignon x Merlot blend really shows what oak can do for it — more structure and complexity than the everyday Red, without the vintage-dependent scarcity of the Reserva.

New to wine?

A step up in structure from the everyday Kobe Wine Red — the oak aging adds body without becoming heavy, making it an approachable way to try a more serious Japanese red.

Food Pairings

Pairs well with hearty meat dishes such as yakiniku, sukiyaki, yakitori, grilled steak, and pasta with ground meat. The oak-derived structure also stands up to Kobe beef and other richly marbled cuts.

When to drink it

Everyday dinners with grilled or simmered meat, casual gatherings, gifting
