A red wine made entirely from grapes grown at Kawakami Farm in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture — the farm's first wine crafted from 100% Sakurai-grown fruit. The blend is built on Seibel, a cold-hardy hybrid variety, rounded out with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, both notoriously difficult to ripen in Nara's climate. The result is a light-bodied red with the characteristic tannic structure of these dedicated wine varieties and concentrated, grape-forward flavor.

Sommelier's Note

A rare 100%-Sakurai-grown red — proof that Nara's climate, long thought too difficult for European varieties, can still produce an honest, drinkable wine.

New to wine?

An approachable, easy-drinking red that's a gentle way to try Nara's little-known wine region.

Food Pairings

The light tannin and clean, grape-driven fruit pair naturally with grilled or simmered dishes that carry a touch of umami, such as teriyaki chicken or beef sukiyaki.

When to drink it

Available as a furusato nozei (hometown tax) reward from Sakurai City; a good conversation-starter bottle for casual dinners or as a gift for Japanese-wine enthusiasts.

Terroir & Winemaking

Made from 100% Sakurai City-grown grapes: a Seibel-based blend rounded out with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bottled at 720ml, 11% ABV. Ingredients: grapes (Sakurai City) and sulfites (antioxidant) only — no other fruit or flavoring is used.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grapes are used in Kawakami Farm's A Label red wine?
It is a blend based on Seibel, a cold-hardy hybrid grape, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown 100% on Kawakami Farm's own vineyards in Sakurai City, Nara.
What does it taste like?
Light-bodied and easy-drinking, with the characteristic tannin of its wine-specific varieties and concentrated, straightforward grape flavor rather than heavy oak or overripe fruit notes.
How is the A Label different from the B Label?
Both are made from the same 100% Sakurai-grown grape blend (Seibel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) at 720ml and 11% ABV; A Label and B Label are separate furusato nozei reward listings with different bottle labels and donation tiers rather than different wines.
