Muscat Bailey A KONTOKUYA Barrel Fermented is the premium-tier KONTOKUYA-series red from Kawachi Wine, a family-run winery in Komagatani, Habikino City, Osaka. Launched to mark 90 years of winemaking on this land, the KONTOKUYA series was created to honor the family name with wines worthy of it. This bottling, made from fully ripened Muscat Bailey A harvested in 2019 and fermented in oak barrels, was the series' first Muscat Bailey A release. It offers strawberry and cherry fruit character layered with smoky, oak-derived nuance in a soft, elegant style with a long, refined finish. Bottled at 750ml and 11% ABV, it is priced at ¥3,520 — a distinctly higher-tier product than the winery's standard-line Kintoku Budoshu Muscat Bailey A (750ml, ¥2,200, no barrel fermentation), and not a duplicate of it.

Sommelier's Note

The KONTOKUYA series' debut Muscat Bailey A proves the grape can carry oak with elegance — a must-try for anyone who thinks Muscat Bailey A can't age gracefully in barrel.

New to wine?

Soft tannins and vivid berry aromatics with a touch of oak-derived complexity make this an approachable step up from everyday Muscat Bailey A.

Food Pairings

The oak-layered berry fruit pairs well with grilled duck, roast chicken, and soy-glazed grilled dishes; the soft tannins also suit yakitori with tare sauce and simmered beef dishes.

When to drink it

Suited to a special dinner, an anniversary, or as a step-up gift for someone already familiar with Japanese Muscat Bailey A wines.
