Osaka is one of Japan's earliest wine regions, with commercial grape growing dating back to the 1880s and winemaking to the early 20th century. The Kawachi area — spanning Kashiwara, Habikino, Yao and Taishi — was once the country's largest producing district, home to as many as 119 wineries at its peak. Katashimo Winery (Katashimo Wine Food Co.), founded in 1914 in Kashiwara, is the oldest surviving winery in western Japan and still operates today alongside a small handful of producers such as Kawachi Wine and Fujimaru Winery. In 2021 Japan's National Tax Agency granted Osaka a Geographical Indication (GI), recognizing wines made entirely from grapes grown within the prefecture. Ample sunshine, a mild climate and well-drained soil support the cultivation of Delaware — Osaka ranks third nationally in Delaware production — alongside Muscat Bailey A and other varieties originally grown as table grapes. The wines are typically fresh and approachable, with concentrated fruit, gentle acidity and a food-friendly finish.
Best for
History-minded drinkers and fans of approachable, food-friendly Japanese wine
Food Pairings
Pairs naturally with Osaka's own street food — takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu — as well as light seafood and vinegared dishes; the crisp, fruity Delaware-based whites and sparklings especially suit fried and sauced comfort food.

Angel Wing Winery
Angel Wing Winery is a licensed winery operated by Natural Farm Grape and Wine Co., Ltd. in the Ōgata district of Kashiwara City, part of Osaka's historic Kawachi grape-growing region. The winery crafts small-batch wines from locally grown Concord and Muscat Bailey A grapes, and it also serves as a contract-brewing facility for independent winemakers who bring in fruit sourced from other regions of Japan. Asuka Wine
Founded in 1934 in Habikino, Osaka, Asuka Wine is one of only three wineries still operating from the roughly 100 grape farmers who turned to winemaking after Typhoon Muroto devastated the region's table-grape crop. Now led by second-generation president Yuzo Nakamura, the family estate farms more than 30 grape varieties—including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Koshu, Muscat Bailey A, and Delaware—across over 5 hectares of Osaka Eco-Certified vineyards, using minimal pesticides and composting vine prunings and pomace back into the soil. Guided by the belief that great wine starts with great grapes, Asuka Wine handles every step from vine to bottle in-house, and its Sparkling Chardonnay has won back-to-back gold medals at the Japan Wine Competition.

Katashimo Wine Foods Co., Ltd.
Founded in 1914 in Kashiwara City, Osaka Prefecture, Katashimo Wine Foods is the oldest continuously operating winery in western Japan. What began as founder Sakujiro Takai's sake-brewing-inspired experiments with Delaware grapes grown by his father Risaburo became, in 1968, a formally incorporated winery. Now led by fourth-generation chairman Toshihiro Takai and fifth-generation director Makiko Takai, the winery farms roughly 40 grape varieties -- including its signature Delaware, Muscat Bailey A, Chardonnay, Koshu, and the rare heritage variety Katashita Honbudo -- across century-old vines tended with reduced-pesticide and organic methods. Its Taisho-era wine cellar, registered as a national tangible cultural property, still stores bottles dating back to 1941, and the winery isolated Japan's first cultivated wine yeast (OC2) there in 1936. Alongside traditional still and sparkling wines, Katashimo also produces Japan's first Japanese-grape grappa and the playful bottle-fermented sparkling wine "Tako-Sham," created to pair with Osaka's beloved takoyaki.

Kawachi Wine
Kawachi Wine Co., Ltd. is a family-run winery based in Komagatani, Habikino City, in the Kawachi district of southern Osaka Prefecture — once Japan's leading grape-growing area. Founded in 1934 by Tokuichi Kondo, who introduced European winemaking techniques to the region, the business was incorporated as Kawachi Wine Co., Ltd. in 1996 and is today led by president Shigeyuki Kondo. Guided by the philosophy that wine is "Wa-In" (和飲) — a drink that brings harmony — Kawachi Wine crafts approachable, food-friendly wines from grapes grown on the warm, well-drained hills around Komagatani, including Delaware, Muscat Bailey A, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, alongside plum liqueurs (umeshu) and grape juices. Its Kawachi Wine Museum welcomes visitors for facility tours, tastings of roughly 20 wines, and dining at Konjikido, a restaurant set in a converted storehouse, making it one of the most visitor-friendly wineries in the Habikino-Kashiwara wine district.

Nakamura Wine Kobo
Nakamura Wine Kobo is a tiny, one-family winery in the Asuka district of Habikino, Osaka — the same historic grape-growing area as the much larger Asuka Wine Co., but an entirely separate, independently licensed operation. Founder Mitsuo Nakamura decided to become a winemaker at age 65, single-handedly terracing a hillside vineyard from 1988 and spending six years obtaining a brewing license before launching the winery in 1993. The estate is unusual even among Japanese wineries for using 100% self-grown grapes from its own 2.2-hectare vineyard, including a proprietary red-leaved crossbreed called Mitsuo Red alongside Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Koshu and Delaware. Its best-known bottlings are "Ganko Oyaji" (Stubborn Old Man), a Cabernet Sauvignon and Muscat Bailey A-led red, and "Sachiko," a Koshu-based white named after the founder's wife, both fermented simply in stainless steel to let the fruit speak for itself. Second-generation winemaker Genji Nakamura, who ran a sake shop in Osaka City by night and tended the vines by day, stepped back at the end of 2021 for health reasons, and as of the most recent reports the winery's future operations remained under discussion — though it continues to be recognized as a distinct member of the Osaka Wineries Association alongside Asuka Wine.

Shimanouchi Fujimaru Winery
Shimanouchi Fujimaru Winery is a pioneering urban winery founded in 2006 in the heart of Osaka by Tomofumi Fujimaru, a former sommelier who studied winemaking abroad before returning to express the terroir of Osaka. The winery began growing its own grapes in 2010, practicing reduced-pesticide viticulture suited to Osaka's relatively rainy climate. Delaware accounts for roughly 70% of their plantings, and Fujimaru was one of the early pioneers of orange wine in Japan, adopting traditional Georgian qvevri (amphora) for skin-contact fermentation to create wines that pair naturally with Japanese cuisine. The winery operates an attached restaurant, bridging production, retail, and dining in one urban location.
