Ki is a red wine made from 100% Yamagata-grown Muscat Bailey A, produced by Kasugai Winery Haru no Kaze, an urban winery in Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture. It is released in two versions: a fresh, unoaked bottling with a bright ruby color and light-to-medium body, and a barrel-aged version with deeper ruby color and added notes of vanilla and toast from oak aging. Both are medium-dry, easy-drinking reds that showcase the charming, candy-like fruit character typical of Japan's native Muscat Bailey A grape.
Muscat Bailey A rarely gets this much personality packed into a friendly, low-tannin frame — Ki's oak-aged version in particular proves this native grape can carry real complexity without losing its charm.
New to wine?
A gentle, candy-fruited red made from Japan's native Muscat Bailey A grape — soft tannins and bright red-berry sweetness make it an easy first red for those who find typical reds too heavy.
Food Pairings
Pairs beautifully with Japanese home cooking built on sweet-savory sauces: teriyaki chicken, yakitori with tare, hamburger steak or meatloaf-style dishes, demi-glace omurice, lightly spiced pork sauté, and soy-simmered dishes like sukiyaki or nikujaga. The barrel-aged version's vanilla and toast notes also stand up well to grilled meats with a touch of char.
When to drink it
Casual dinners with teriyaki, yakitori, or hamburger steak; a friendly, food-first red for everyday Japanese home cooking. The barrel-aged version suits slightly more special occasions.
Terroir & Winemaking
750ml bottle. Made from 100% Muscat Bailey A grapes sourced from Yamagata Prefecture (grapes are not estate-grown; Kasugai Winery Haru no Kaze crafts small-batch wines from selected Yamagata fruit at its urban winery in Aichi). Style: medium-dry (yaya-karakuchi). ABV 11%. Two bottlings share the same base wine: '季2025' is unoaked, fermented and finished without wood contact, showing a translucent ruby color, soft tannins, and fresh, fruit-forward character (¥3,850). '季2025樽' is aged in oak barrels, adding vanilla, coconut, and light spice/toast notes over a deeper ruby color and slightly firmer tannic structure (¥5,500). Requires refrigeration below 18°C; best served slightly chilled at 10-17°C. Note: in earlier vintages (2023-2024) this bottling was sometimes vinified in a lighter, saignée-style rosé; the current 2025 release is classified by the winery as a red wine.
