TOMOE Shokoshi Muscat Bailey A is Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery's flagship "Japan Blend" red, made entirely from two Japanese-bred grape varieties: Shokoshi, a deeply colored, high-acid hybrid descended from wild Vitis coignetiae mountain grapes, and Muscat Bailey A, prized for its soft fruitiness and floral lift. Unlike the winery's entry-level TOMOE Muscat Bailey A — a 100% Muscat Bailey A wine fermented and finished entirely in stainless steel with no oak contact — or the single-vineyard Kitsuda, Shibatoko and Yanagi bottlings made from the same variety, this cuvée barrel-ages its Shokoshi component before blending it with Muscat Bailey A, layering cooked-fruit richness (prune, blueberry jam) and violet aromatics over low tannins and fresh acidity. Deep reddish-purple in color, it delivers a smooth, complex, medium-bodied palate with a long, umami-tinged finish shaped by the barrel-matured Shokoshi. The 2019 vintage was served at the G7 Hiroshima Summit's social dinner at the Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima in May 2023, cementing its status as one of the winery's most celebrated reds.
This is the wine that proves Japan's own Shokoshi grape deserves a seat at the table — barrel-matured and blended with Muscat Bailey A, it is Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery's most distinctive red, not to be confused with the winery's stainless-steel, single-variety Muscat Bailey A bottlings.
