TOMOE Chardonnay Crisp is the freshest and most approachable expression in Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery's TOMOE Chardonnay lineup, made from 100% Chardonnay grown in the Miyoshi basin of Hiroshima Prefecture. Unlike its stablemates in the series — the barrel-fermented, barrel-MLF flagship Shingetsu ("new moon"), the oak-aged second label Taigetsu ("waiting moon"), and the tank-fermented, oak-aged Reserve — Crisp is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel tanks with no oak contact whatsoever, preserving the pure, vibrant character of the fruit. It shows a clear, pale straw color with aromas of lemon peel, candied citrus and kumquat layered with delicate chamomile and marguerite florals, a soft mandarin-honey sweetness on entry, crisp refreshing acidity, and a lingering bitter-orange finish reminiscent of yuzu. The 2023 vintage won a Gold Medal in the European-style white wine category at the Japan Wine Competition 2024, confirming Crisp's place as an accessible yet award-caliber introduction to the TOMOE range.
The purest expression of Miyoshi terroir in the TOMOE range — skip the oak and taste the fruit; a Gold Medal winner that proves freshness can be just as serious as barrel complexity.
