No I won't be afraid (Sou Kowakunantenainda) is a dry red still wine from Hakko Chaud (formerly Domaine Chaud), a small Niigata-based winery. The wine is made from Cabernet Dorsa and Cabernet Mitos grapes grown in Yoichi, Hokkaido, and is aged in new oak barrels with fermentation from a combination of wild and cultivated yeasts, without added sulfites. The 2022 vintage marked the wine's return to the lineup after a six-year hiatus. Tasting notes describe a bold, full entry from the barrel-driven fruit that fades into a remarkably light, clean, and refreshing finish.
A striking example of Hokkaido-grown hybrid reds from a Niigata producer — the new-oak richness up front and the clean, fade-away finish is the kind of contrast worth seeking out after its six-year absence.
New to wine?
An approachable, medium-bodied Japanese red with a bold start and a surprisingly light, clean finish — easy to enjoy even for those new to hybrid-grape Japanese wines.
Food Pairings
The bold entry and clean, light finish make it a flexible partner for grilled or roasted meats, yakitori, and mushroom dishes; its moderate tannin and fresh acidity also suit slightly rich, savory home cooking.
When to drink it
Great for casual dinners with grilled meat or yakitori, or as a distinctive gift for fans of small-production Japanese natural wine.
