Launched in the early 2000s, Blandy's Alvada is a distinctive 50/50 blend of Bual and Malmsey grapes, aged an average of five years and finished in new oak — a departure from the traditional single-varietal Madeira range. It shows an amber colour with a greenish tinge at the rim, lifted aromas of dried fruit with a touch of balsamic and mocha, and a smooth, figgy palate with a hint of coconut from the new oak, leading to a long, bright finish.
The only blended Madeira in Blandy's range — and proof that breaking tradition can still taste unmistakably of Madeira.
New to wine?
Blandy's most approachable modern Madeira — smooth, figgy and immediately likeable, with none of the austerity some expect from fortified wine.
Food Pairings
Excellent with Christmas pudding, fruitcake, walnuts and dried figs; also pairs well with soft, mild blue cheeses.
When to drink it
Casual after-dinner drink, holiday gatherings, gifting
Terroir & Winemaking
A 50/50 blend of Bual and Malmsey grapes, aged an average of five years in cask with finishing time in new oak, giving it a rounder, more contemporary character than Blandy's traditional single-varietal range.
