Bibbiano

Sangiovese Grosso

About this wine

One of Bibbiano's two flagship single-vineyard wines, sourced exclusively from the 7-hectare Vigna del Capannino, planted only to Sangiovese Grosso on reddish-brown, clay-rich soils on the estate's southwest-facing slope. This terroir produces a dense, structured wine with rich black fruit. The nose shows earthy berries, blood orange, dried plum, tar, black tea and new leather; the palate is full-bodied yet juicy and linear, with plush, layered tannins. Vinous rated the 2018 vintage 91 points.

Beginner's Note

A powerful, structured Chianti Classico best approached after trying the Annata and Riserva first.

Sommelier's Note

"Vigna del Capannino is Bibbiano's power statement — dense, black-fruited, and built to age, it's the wine that put the estate's clonal-selection research on the map."

Food Pairings

A wine for slow-cooked, savory dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, or grilled unagi with a rich tare sauce.

When to drink it
