Pugnane's flagship Barolo DOCG, produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grown on the family's plot within the celebrated Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel with natural yeasts, macerated on the skins for around 25 days with regular pump-overs, then aged for three years in large Slavonian oak botti followed by a minimum of six months in bottle before release. The result is a bright garnet-rimmed Barolo with aromas of dark berries, dried flowers and cocoa, dry and full-bodied with a harmonious tannic backbone.
One of Castiglione Falletto's most unpretentious readings of Villero — traditional, unhurried in the cellar, and built to reward patience rather than impress on day one.
New to wine?
A traditionally-built, age-worthy Barolo — give it a long decant (or a few years in the cellar) and it opens into something generous rather than austere.
Food Pairings
A classic partner for slow-cooked red meat and game — braised beef cheeks, wild boar ragù, duck, and dishes built around truffle or porcini. Aged Piedmontese cheeses such as Castelmagno also work beautifully.
When to drink it
Special-occasion dinners, milestone celebrations, and anywhere a slow-cooked meat centerpiece is on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes Pugnane's Barolo Villero distinctive?
- It comes exclusively from the Sordo family's own plot within the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto, and is aged the traditional way — three years in large Slavonian oak casks rather than small barriques — which preserves Nebbiolo's pure fruit and floral character.
- Is this the same winery as Giovanni Sordo?
- No. Azienda Agricola Pugnane (Fratelli Sordo) is a separate, smaller family estate founded in 1950 by Enrico Sordo, distinct from the better-known Sordo Giovanni winery, though both are based in Castiglione Falletto.
- How long can this Barolo age?
- Traditionally-made Villero Barolo from producers in this style typically drinks well for 10-20 years from the vintage, thanks to Nebbiolo's naturally high tannin and acidity.
- What food pairs best with Barolo Villero?
- Rich, slow-cooked dishes — braised beef, game, mushroom or truffle-based plates — stand up well to its structure and tannin.
