About this wine

The estate's flagship red, a Rhône-inspired field blend built around old bush-vine Shiraz (Syrah) with Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre and the historic Cape variety Tinta Barocca. Hand-harvested on the same day from vines on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg, the grapes are whole-bunch fermented in open concrete fermenters and old wooden kuipe, with extended post-fermentation maceration, before aging in large old French oak foudres. The wine shows brooding aromas of black cherry, pepper, liquorice and dried florals, with a dense, savory palate, fine-grained tannins and a long, spice-laced finish — a benchmark expression of Swartland red winemaking.

Beginner's Note

A rewarding step up from Secateurs Red — more concentrated and structured, but still built around the same juicy, spice-driven Swartland character.

Sommelier's Note

"This is Swartland Rhône blending at its most honest — old vines, native yeasts, and zero shortcuts, resulting in a red that rewards patience in the cellar as much as at the table."

Food Pairings

Its structure and savory spice make it ideal with grilled lamb, venison, and slow-braised game stews. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie and hard, aged cheeses.

When to drink it

Cool-weather dinners featuring roasted or grilled meats, or a special occasion calling for a serious, age-worthy red.
